Ways to Avoid Being Hacked

Sometimes we are hacked and it is obvious because all of a sudden our beautiful website is selling black market goods or worse. Other times we don’t know we have been hacked until we do a Google search and find that clicking our results redirects to another website selling who knows what.

You will be pleased to know there is a lot you can do to avoid this:

  • Get a decent host with a decent Firewall. Good hosting costs money but there are huge benefits in addition to the excellent security they offer. They also provide great caching, which ensures fast page load speeds and that is great for your Google ranking.
  • Make sure you have a current and secure SSL certificate.
  • Install WordFence, this is an excellent plugin that will keep your site secure. It will stop hackers by blocking IP addresses after failed password attempts and so much more.
  • Never use the username ‘admin’. Set a unique username, preferably at least 8 characters long.
  • Downgrade your users, Editor gives plenty of access for most users. You only need one administrator for the site.
  • Use the complex passwords that WordPress generates, don’t use easy passwords.
  • Never share your password with anyone, certainly not by email.
